Introducing Huriana Lawrence, Kaiwhakapakari Tinana Whakatu Marae
My role at the marae is to encourage and support whanau of all ages to include more exercise into their lives and be aware of good nutrition.
I developed a love of exercise after I had my first child.
First I started going to aerobics classes, and then later I began teaching them.
I learned lots of physical activity and nutrition skills along the way.
If people are scared of exercise I like encouraging them, and convincing them that it's not all about mirrors, lycra and buff sweaty bodies.
It's a place to be pro-active, address your own health, with no cultural barriers and to enjoy the outcomes of your hard work.
I love the way being active makes people feel good - and proud when they achieve things they never thought possible.

Hi 5 to... Kanikani Puoro
|
Huriana shakes it up at Whakatu Marae

‘Shaking bits you didn't know you had' is how Huriana Lawrence from the
Whakatu marae Way2Go Hub describes her new exercise class. It's called
Kanikani Puoro - kanikani meaning ‘dance' and puoro ‘to rumble' -
Huriana says the name can take your imagination wherever you want. She
says most people love to dance, so she's used her fitness background to
help choreograph the routines to a variety of music and styles.
"There's a bit of Latin, and a bit of hip hop - but it's easy and you
don't have to be a great dancer to be able to do it," she says. "You
just need to be over ten years old, bring shoes and a drink bottle - and
a smile on your face."
Huriana says Kanikani Puoro is just another tool to get whanau active
and she hopes people will come along and try it out. Classes are held
5.30pm Monday and Wednesday, Whakatu Marae in the wharekai. Free or
koha.
